Mars' Erebus Crater and Mt Erebus in Antarctica

This is a QuickTime VR I made some years ago comprised of images created by the Opportunity rover. Opportunity had traveled some distance to come to the edge of what the NASA team called the "Erebus Crater". From several images available on the NASA website, I was able to stitch together this self portrait of the Opportunity Rover and a 360 degree view of Mars at the edge of the crater.

NASA named the crater after the HMS Erebus, which along with the HMS Terror, were the two ships that polar explorer James Clark Ross used to explore the Antarctic coast between 1839 and 1843.

12,448 ft Mt. Erebus is an active volcano near McMurdo station. It is the furthest south of any recently active volcano. James Clark Ross named it after his ship. NASA named the Martian crater after Ross' ship as well.

Mt Erebus was apparently first climbed by members of Shackleton's party. I wonder who might first step foot in Mars' Erebus crater.
